In this short retreat, we will follow in the footsteps of the Buddha and practice silent meditation based on the Anapanasati Sutta, a discourse by the Buddha. Anapanasati is Pali and roughly translates to “mindfulness of breathing in and out.” Through sixteen progressive exercises, the Buddha outlined methods to develop greater awareness of our body, sensations, mind, and phenomena in conjunction with our breath. This form of practice has been combined by His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Tinle Lhündrub with approaches from various Buddhist traditions and named Shravasti Meditation, after the place where the Buddha gave this discourse.
During this silent weekend, we will primarily familiarize ourselves with the initial meditation exercises. The focus will be on silent sitting with breath observation, accompanied by simple yoga exercises and walking meditation. The aim is not so much on the theoretical imparting of knowledge about meditation, but rather on direct personal experience.
