What does it mean to study the Dharma? What content and goals characterize Buddhist studies at traditional monastic universities – in the past and today? How is knowledge passed on, and what role does study play on the path to liberation and awakening?

In this lecture, we will explore the tradition of Buddhist monastic universities in India and Tibet. Starting from the great centers such as Nālandā and Vikramaśīla, a unique culture of study developed in the Tibetan region, in which study, contemplation, and meditation are closely intertwined.

Katrin Querl introduces us to the historical world of the great study centers in India and Tibet, and offers a personal insight into the current shedra program at the main monastery of the Drikung Kagyu tradition in Dehradun, where she studied as a Buddhist nun for six years.
